Basically this is like the Iron Chef for 3D design. You’d better believe I’ll be prepping for the Boston competition. I’ll be pumpin’ iron, eating my wheaties, juicin’… all that stuff. Get ready to ROCK. (I highly recommend the video).

This is the response I got via email:

Dear Entrant in Cut&Paste Boston 3D Competition

Congratulations you have made it through to the first stage of contestant selection: TEST ROUNDS! Through the course of Test Rounds, we will be meeting candidates to learn more about them and we will make our final selection shortly afterward. We look forward to meeting you and checking out your design skills in-person.

But before we see you, we need to confirm a few details with you:

    1. Are you available between 5-11PM on March 14th for the Cut&Paste Boston 2009 event? If not, you will not be able to participate
    2. Are you available for Competitor Orientation on March 7th in the afternoon? If not, please let us know. It’s highly encouraged you attend, but it does not preclude you from participating
    3. In your reply to this e-mail, please tell us which software and hardware platforms you plan to use in competition. Please note: We will need you to bring your own laptop or workstation for test rounds due to high variation in software/hardware among our entrants. We will provide the workstations with your selected software for the actual event.

    Now let’s get started!!

    What
You will complete a 20-minute design round as a test round. During the round, the Cut&Paste team will be watching you in order to see how you create and present your work during the round. It’s also a great way to give you a feel for the tournament format – should you make it, you’ll be more familiar.

    When
Test Rounds will be conducted in 30-minute appointments on the following days and times:

    Saturday, January 24st – 10AM – 6PM
    Sunday, January 25th – 10AM – 6PM

Please respond to this e-mail indicating three choices of 30-minute times on any of the days and we’ll e-mail to confirm a time with you. Please be on-time as our schedule is TIGHT!!!

    Agenda
We’d like to meet with you on either Saturday, January 24th or Sunday, January 25th in one 30-minute session. We’ll spend the first five minutes giving you some background and then you’ll do a test design round of 20-minutes, with five minutes remaining for questions. We’ll be doing these two candidates at a time. Lastly, if you would like to come before or after your Test Round, feel free to meet your fellow Test Rounders and see each other work.

    Challenge
The object of the round is to complete a static 3D model using any software you like on your own laptop or workstation based on the following theme:

    BLISS

You may express this theme in any 3D form – a concept, a character, an object.

You will be given time to setup your workstation before the round begins. Music will be playing in the background (You can bring in headphones if you like). Do take the days before your round to think about the theme and prepare. We make our own luck, right?

    Rules & Equipment
All work must be created from scratch during the 20-minute test round. You may bring in up to three pre-made 2D digital assets in advance, but no pre-made 3D modeled objects may be incorporated.

Please Note: Due to the wide variation in 3D software available, you will need to bring your own laptop on which to do your own test round. You can also bring in the following equipment of your own if you like (optional):

    • Wacom Tablet
    • Mouse (we provide standard Mac mouse, but you might have a three-button you particularly like)

Lastly, test rounds are meant to be fun and friendly – don’t stress or think too hard, but we encourage you to take some time to prepare.

Please reply to me with a list of three ranked 30-minute time slots from 10AM-6PM on either listed day. Also, before you attend Test Rounds, we ask that you fill in a quick information form on our website at:
