Hi Adam,
I was wondering if you could offer some suggestions on how to create a convincing gun metal finish material in Modo. Ive included an image to show what Im after.

This is also a description of the process.

Hi Scott!
A quick browse through the Luxology Asset Sharing Library:
…reveals quite a few options for you. Among them are scratched metals, gunmetal, and other metal materials
to play around with. Remember, just because the material icon may look like ‘pure gold’ for example, doesn’t mean that you can’t adjust the properties manually once added to your shader tree. The materials you drop in never have to be the final output. From my personal experience, (and it depends on the final presentation) I always start with the base material (metal here, based on ‘the closest I see to what I want’) and adjust the material properties accordingly. For this example you’re showing, the blue can be achieved by adjusting the color properties based on the particular effect you want, based off of the metal you choose (scratched/shiny/matte?).
I would start by playing around with the shared materials at Luxology, or playing around with the included materials in your package, and then go from there!
If you need more information on adjusting material properties, I would take a look at Adam’s ‘Coffeeshop Tutorial’ in which he outlines various adjustments with material properties.
Try this (material properties I): http://cadjunkie.com/2655/tutorials_coffee-shop-03/
Or this (material properties II): http://cadjunkie.com/2657/tutorials_coffee-shop-04/
Hope that helps!
Simon
Thank you Simon. Ive looked at the materials both in Modo and on the Luxology page and they come close but not quite there. Im also curious to see what steps Adam would take to accomplish this finish. Id like to be able to create it from a base material but Im not sure where to start. For some reason I feel a gradient should be involved and possibly and occlusion material but Im not sure. I will look further into the links you provided and see if I missed something.
thanks

Cool challenge, Scott! Video time!! I’ve got a few requests backed up at the moment, but this is a great one. I’ll definitely try to get to it, maybe over the weekend?
Thanks bro! TTYS
Thanks Adam, when ever you can get to it,I know your plate is full. Ive playing with the different materials but havent quite hit the look. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it.

Scott, the closest ‘base material’ I’ve found in Modo that resembles gun metal is LEAD. That’s the material I chose to do the slide on my Kimber:

The result was so good that I didn’t bother trying to tweak it further, but I imagine you could really go crazy adding fine scratches, fading, and the tiny grooves put on by the mill.
Looks good Andrew, thank you. I suspect if I added an occlusion material that might get some results Im after.
What exactly does an occlusion material do?
It gives you the ability to create worn edges.

Perfect!
Thank you Adam, that was what I was looking for. Im gonna go try this now. I will upload the image when Im done.

Hi Adam,
So here is my pass on the material. I did change a few settings, added an image map and an additional gradient for the subtle iridescent color.

Here is another one with your part

NICE Scott!! So impressive. Glad it was helpful! Mind sharing your material preset? ;) I know we’d all love to see!
Here is my pass on the material. Please share with everyone. The scratch texture is in the zip file as well.

Thanks for sharing, Scott! Now I’ll finally be able to render my Uzi. Guns made from stamped metal just don’t look right without worn edges. :)
