Overview

Last week we built boxes, and this week we’ll render them. Along the way we’ll take a look at item heiarchy’s in modo, specifically how to make the logo in the top-left of the image appear to be stationary, even when the camera is moved or rotated.

By the end By the end of this class, you will have rendered a glossy ad for the ?Happiness in a Box? package we built last week.of this class.

new topics:

  • Prepping Adobe Illustrator art for export
  • importing and freezing Illustrator art
  • Middle-mouse vs. Right-mouse for lasso selection
  • creating a ?shadow catcher? planes
  • imple directional light settings
  • basic render settings
  • RayGL settings
  • make geometry move with the camera
  • assigning materials
  • tip: hiding the shadow catcher in OpenGL
  • environment material color
  • intro to drag and drop presets
  • render window tour / saving renders

Homework

Take the shopping spree file from last week and set up a simple render. Experiment with materials, and try to assign different materials for each box.

What do different kids of materials communicate about what might be inside the boxes? What materials communicate high price points, and which communicate a bargain? What materials seem ordinary in this context, and which materials are attention-grabbing?

Use various colors to complement your formal composition, and to further communicate the theme established in your composition last week (i.e. old shoe store vs. traditional display vs. ultra-modern, etc).

Turn in a JPG image of the final result, NOT THE LXO.
