My good friend Gustavo threw out an irresistible challenge via Twitter last week, so I’ve put together a brief response. Quoth G:

I am dumbfounded that SW does not have a draft hinge function when drafting. How inconvenient is it to always create a plane just to draft. Crazy!!!! Pro/e file attached showing what I mean.

Agreed. SW is shockingly weak in this area. The “ruled surface” tool is painfully weak as well, making situations like the one you illustrate a real headache.

It’s also annoying and time consuming having to create a work plane just to mirror an object or feature. How crazy is that?! In AutoCad, I can pick any point in 3-D space to mirror from, and I can easily move the mirrored component into place with the snap settings enabled. In SW, this process is so involved that I sometimes find myself doing these operations in an assembly file, then saving it as a part file just to cut down on the amount of work.
I actually disagree with that statement, Andrew. Yes, it’s quicker to mirror objects in AutoCAD and Rhino, but in these cases we’re not trying to maintain parametric associativity. When creating associative geometry, it’s critical that every piece of geometry be represented in the design tree. It’s extra clicks in the short run, but much more efficient in the long run, when you’re able to easily modify or update those relationships.
