Since I’m putting together a video series walking through the basics of Rhino, I’ve decided to create a parallel series looking at the equivalent functionalities in SolidWorks 2010.

Since I’m trying to stick pretty literally to the Rhino video series, it should be easy for noob’s to follow the differences between these two very different methodologies.

This is the first video in a basic SolidWorks 2010 tutorial series that mirrors the Rhino tutorials here: http://cadjunkie.com/2010/01/14/otis-rhino-basics-week-01/

This video covers the following topics:

- Creating a part file
- Interface overview
- Hide/Show tree items
- Creating a sketch, drawing shapes
- navigation (rotate, pan, zoom)
- Basic Extruded boss/base
- ‘Merge Result’
- Sketch on face
- Introduction to parametric history

Three more vids after the jump:

- Deleting features
– absorbed features
– delete children
- Drawing basic shapes in the sketcher
- Extruded boss/base ‘Selected Contours’ intro

This is the third video in a basic SolidWorks 2010 tutorial series that mirrors the Rhino tutorials here: http://cadjunkie.com/2010/01/14/otis-rhino-basics-week-01/

- Boolean ‘Combine’
– add
– subtract
– combine

This is the fourth video in a basic SolidWorks 2010 tutorial series that mirrors the Rhino tutorials here: http://cadjunkie.com/2010/01/14/otis-rhino-basics-week-01/

This video covers the following topics:

- homework: future city

Hi there Adam. Thanks for the tutorial vids you have here, it works wonders. I’m an autocad user and is new to this CAD software. Got some of your vids downloaded from youtube.com and I kept practicing it. Really appreciated what you have done and more power.

    Hi Adam,

I agree with all of the above. I am new to this software also, and your explanations are coming from the other logic had by old school surface modelers that I am more familiar with.

I would love to ask you all the questions I have, but I don’t think you have enough time to volunteer for that type of work! No one does.

Thanks for providing the best starting point I have found yet! You give the internet one of its fundamental purposes.
